Resumo Em uma escala global o Sorghum bicolor (L.) é uma das culturas mais importantes, ocupando o quinto lugar entre todos os cereais. É cultivada na África, Ásia, Oceania e Américas, onde serve como fonte de alimento e ração para humanos e animais, respectivamente. No entanto, a produção é limitada por vários fatores, incluindo pragas e doenças. Entre as pragas que atacam o sorgo, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), comumente chamado de pulgão verde dos cereais, é a praga mais destrutiva do sorgo. O dano de S. graminum ao sorgo é agravado pelo déficit hídrico que favorece sua ocorrência. Informações limitadas sobre a distribuição espacial da praga e seus inimigos naturais impedem o desenvolvimento de estratégias de manejo ecologicamente corretas. Portanto, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi determinar a distribuição espaço-temporal de S. graminum e seu inimigo natural Coccinella septempunctata (L.) durante a fase vegetativa e reprodutiva da cultura por meio de análise geoestatística. A distribuição espaço-temporal de S. graminum foi influenciada pelo estágio de desenvolvimento do sorgo, paisagem circundante e presença de seu principal predador C. septempunctata. Além disso, a abundância de C. septempunctata foi influenciada pela densidade de S. graminum. Os resultados deste estudo são necessários para o desenvolvimento de estratégias sustentáveis de manejo de pragas contra S. graminum.

Abstract At the global level, Sorghum bicolor (L.), is one of the most important crops, which ranks fifth among all cereals. It is cultivated in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, where it serves as a source of food and feed for humans and animals, respectively. However, production is constrained by several factors including pests and diseases. Among the pests that are known to attack Sorghum, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), commonly called the green cereal aphid, is the most destructive pest of sorghum. S. graminum damage to sorghum is worsen by water deficit which favors its occurrence. Limited information on the spatial distribution of the pest and its natural enemies impedes the development of ecologically friendly management strategies. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the spatiotemporal distribution of S. graminum and its natural enemy Coccinella septempunctata (L.) during the vegetative and reproductive stage of the crop using geostatistical analysis. The spatiotemporal distribution of S. graminum was influenced by Sorghum development stage, surrounding landscape, and presence of its main predator C. septempunctata. Moreover, the abundance of C. septempunctata was influenced by the density of S. graminum. The findings from this study are required for developing sustainable pest management strategies against S. graminum.

Resumo Streptococcus pneumoniae é um dos principais patógenos associados a infecções respiratórias agudas (IRAs) que causam altas taxas de morbidade e mortalidade entre crianças menores de cinco anos de idade em países desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento. Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a prevalência de colonização da nasofaringe, o perfil de resistência antimicrobiana e a capacidade de formação de biofilme dos S. pneumoniae isolados de crianças de 0 a 6 anos com IRA na cidade de Porto Velho-Rondônia. Um total de 660 swabs foi coletado de crianças com IRA. Testes moleculares e bioquímicos foram realizados para identificar os isolados bacterianos. O método de disco-difusão e o E-test foram utilizados para o teste de sensibilidade antimicrobiana (TSA). A capacidade de formação de biofilme foi avaliada por meio de ensaios em placas de microtitulação e a detecção de sorotipos foi obtida por meio de análises de Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR). A taxa de colonização por S. pneumoniae foi de 8,9% (59/660) e apresentou alta prevalência em menores de 23 meses de idade 64,4% (38/59). Os sorotipos identificados foram 9V e 19F com frequências de 1,7% (1/59) e 13,6% (8/59) respectivamente. O teste de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos revelou 100% (59/59) de sensibilidade à vancomicina. Em contraste, trimetoprima e oxacilina apresentaram altas taxas de resistência de 76,3% (45/59) e 52,5% (31/59) respectivamente. Dos isolados formadores de biofilme 54,8% (23/42) possuíam resistência a alguns dos antimicrobianos. Neste estudo, S. pneumoniae apresentou altas taxas de resistência antimicrobiana e capacidade de formar biofilmes, pois são fatores que favorecem a persistência bacteriana e podem causar sérios danos ao hospedeiro.

Abstract Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the primary pathogens that are associated with acute respiratory infections (ARI) that cause high rates of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age in developed and developing countries. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nasopharyngeal colonization, the antimicrobial resistance profile, and the capacity for biofilm formation by S. pneumoniae isolated from children aged 0-6 years with ARI throughout the Porto Velho-RO. A total of 660 swabs were collected from children with ARI. Molecular and biochemical tests were performed to characterize the isolates. The disk-difusion method and the E-test were used for antimicrobial sensitivity testing (TSA). Biofilm formation capacity was assessed using microtiter plate assays, and serotype detection was acheived using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses. The colonization rate for S. pneumoniae was 8.9% (59/660) and exhibited a high prevalence in children under 23 months of age 64.4% (38/59). The observed serotypes were 9V and 19F with frequencies of 1.7% (1/59) and 13.6% (8/59), respectively. The antimicrobial susceptibility test revealed 100% (59/59) sensitivity to vancomycin. In contrast, trimethoprim and oxacillin exhibited high resistance rates of 76.3% (45/59) and 52.5% (31/59), respectively. Of the biofilm-forming isolates, 54.8% (23/42) possessed resistance to some antimicrobials. In this study, S. pneumoniae showed high rates of antimicrobial resistance and the ability to form biofilms, as these are factors that favor bacterial persistence and can cause serious damage to the host.

Two nuclear reactions, 11B+100Mo, (Eb=43 MeV) and 16O+51V, (Eb=70 MeV) were studied with a gamma spectrometer with a charged particle array in order to measure the correlation between gamma-rays emitted by residual nuclei produced by heavy-ion reactions in coincidence with a charged particles detected at different angles. Ratios of gamma-transition intensities in coincidence with charged particles were measured for the main products of these reactions, providing a differentiation between the exit channels, even when complete fusion is the only reaction mechanism.

The odd-odd 58Co nucleus has been studied with the 51V(10B, p2n) reaction at 33-MeV incident energy and the gamma-spectrometer Saci-Pererê. Excited states up to 8.0 MeV and spin up to 11+ have been observed. The results are compared to Shell Model calculations using the GXPF1 effective interaction, developed for use in the fp shell. The pif7/2-1<FONT FACE=Symbol>Än</FONT>(p3/2²f5/2¹) configuration was assigned to the yrast levels.

A biomassa microbiana do solo é um componente essencial da matéria orgânica que, entre outras funções, regula a ciclagem de nutrientes no solo. Dentre os métodos mais utilizados para determinação do carbono da biomassa microbiana, destacam-se: os de clorofórmio-fumigação-incubação (CFI) e clorofórmio-fumigação-extração (CFE). Trabalhos na literatura têm comparado a eficiência desses métodos em diversos locais. No entanto, para a região do Cerrado, não existem informações a esse respeito. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência dos métodos CFE e CFI na determinação do carbono da biomassa microbiana do solo (CBMS) em áreas de Cerrado sob cultura anual (rotação soja-milho) e pastagem consorciada (Andropogon gayanus e Stylosanthes guianensis) e sob três fitofisionomias - mata de galeria, campo sujo e cerradão. Amostras de solo coletadas em duas profundidades, 0-5 cm e 5-20 cm, foram analisadas em quatro épocas: agosto de 1998, janeiro e agosto de 1999 e janeiro de 2000. Nas áreas cultivadas, os resultados obtidos com os métodos CFE e CFI foram semelhantes, independentemente dos tratamentos e das épocas amostradas, tendo as pastagens consorciadas apresentado maiores teores de CBMS do que as áreas sob culturas anuais. A interação profundidades x métodos foi significativa. Não houve diferenças entre as profundidades 0-5 e 5-20 cm, quando se utilizou o método CFI, mas as diferenças obtidas com o método CFE foram significativas. Os métodos CFI e CFE apresentaram as mesmas tendências nas áreas nativas, independentemente dos tratamentos, profundidades ou épocas analisados, tendo a mata de galeria apresentado níveis de CBMS superiores aos do cerradão e campo sujo. As interações profundidades x métodos e épocas x métodos foram significativas pelo fato de as diferenças nos teores do carbono da biomassa microbiana, nas profundidades e épocas amostradas, terem sido mais acentuadas com o método CFE. Os resultados indicaram que os métodos CFI e CFE foram apropriados para determinação da CBMS em solos de Cerrado sob cultivo e sob vegetação nativa.

Soil microbial biomass plays an important role in nutrient cycling in soils. Among the several methods that have been used to estimate the soil microbial biomass-C (SMBC), chloroform fumigation incubation (CFI) and chloroform fumigation extraction (CFE) are the most studied. Although several studies in the literature have compared the efficiency of these two methods to estimate SMBC, there is little information for the acid soils of the Cerrado region. The present study compared the efficiency of these two methods in cultivated Cerrado soils (a corn-soybean rotation and a legume-based pasture) and neighboyring in soils under three native vegetation types (gallery forest, grassy savannah and woody savannah). Soil samples were collected at two depths: 0-5 cm and 5-20 cm. Sampling times were: August of 1998 and 1999 and January of 1999 and 2000. The results obtained in cultivated soils with the two methods were similar regardless of treatment and sampling time, however the interaction depth x method was significant. There were no differences between depths 0-5 cm and 5-20 cm with the CFI, whereas the differences observed with CFE were statistically significant. For soils under native vegetation, the results obtained with CFI and CFE were similar regardless of treatments, depth and sampling time. The Gallery Forest presented the greatest levels of SBMC as compared to grassy savannah and woody savannah. The interactions depth x methods and sampling time x methods were statistically significant, because differences were more pronounced with CFE. The results showed that both methods were appropriate to determine microbial biomass carbon in Cerrado soils.
